Virtual Networking with a Commonwealth Campus Student
Alumni can volunteer to help first-year Commonwealth Campus students who are taking BA 197, which is a pre-major, 1-credit course by facilitating a "Virtual Networking" session. The students are required to conduct one session with an alumnus/alumna.
The purpose of this assignment is to provide the students with an opportunity to have a conversation with a working professional, and to also practice setting up an online "Zoom" meeting room. For most students, this will be the first time they are in a true "networking" conversation. This is truly a learning experience for these students - they will not be evaluated on the quality of the conversation; the intent is for the alumni volunteers to help them feel more comfortable and confident.
Register to volunteer during the spring semester by January 26, 2024
What to expect:
1. A one-time 30-minute Virtual Networking Sessions will take place.
2. A staff member will match you up with a student(s). The student(s) you are matched up with will contact you via e-mail to decide on a time that works for the two of you during the semester. The student will then provide you with the Zoom link (alumni volunteers must have access to Zoom during the time of their sessions).
4. During the Virtual Networking Session, the student will introduce themselves and then ask you a series of interview-style questions about your job, company, or other info they discover on your LinkedIn profile or professional bio. The conversations will be no longer than 30 minutes.
5. We will ask that you please provide very brief feedback to the course instructor via e-mail after your conversation (more details to be provided).
6. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jen Crispell (Director of Alumni Relations), Evan Smith, or Dawn Maguire (instructors of the course).
